Nigella Benefits

Also known as black cumin, kalonji or by its scientific name Nigella sativa, Nigella belongs to the buttercup family of flowering plants, and has been used for centuries as a natural remedy. It's packed with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properites.

Packed with antioxidants

Research shows that antioxidants can have a powerful effect on our overall health and disease prevention - with some studies showing positive effects against chronic conditions.

Several compounds found in Nigella seeds, such as thymoquinone, carvacrol, t-anethole and 4-terpineol, are responsible for its potent antioxidant properties.

Anti-inflammatory

Some studies have found that Nigella may have powerful anti-inflammatory effects in the body.

One study of 42 people with rheumatoid arthritis took Nigella daily for eight weeks and showed reduced markers of inflammation and oxidative stress.

In another study compared to a placebo, Nigella was effective at supressing and protecting against inflammation.

Blood sugar regulation

Nigella sativa has been shown to assist in the reduction of elevated blood glucose levels and may assist with improvement of carbohydrate metabolism.

Cholesterol levels

Studies have shown Nigella may be especially effective at lowering cholesterol.

One review of 17 studies found that supplementing with Nigella was associated with significant decreases in both total and “bad” cholesterol (LDL), as well as a reduction in blood triglycerides.

Another study in 57 people with diabetes showed that supplementing with Nigella for one year decreased total and LDL cholesterol, all while increasing HDL cholesterol.

Liver function

Nigella sativa has been shown to help with various liver functions and prevention of liver damage such as ischemia reperfusion injury
